How to identify which 20x25x5 you need

Pull your current filter and read the small "actual size" print on the frame, or check the model/part number stamped on your filter-cabinet door. Match the depth — 4⅜″, 4¾″, 4⅞″, or 5¼″ — to the chart above. Two quick tips: many of these print "20x25x4" on the box even though they're sold as 20x25x5 (Carrier's own FILXXCAR0020 does this), and depth is the number that actually separates the classes. Does a higher-MERV 20x25x5 filter reduce airflow?
Not meaningfully in a 5-inch cabinet. The deep pleats keep even MERV 16 low-resistance, so you can choose MERV by air-quality need. The airflow warnings you usually see apply to thin 1-inch filters.
