Check the Model Number or Actual Size to Make sure your have the Correct Replacement Filter

Three different brands all labeled 16x25x5 have completely different actual sizes:

Ultravation 91-005: 15⅝" x 24⅛" x 4⅞" (smaller)
Honeywell FC100A1029: 15⅞" x 24¾" x 4⅜" (medium)
Goodman P102-1625: 15⅜" x 25½" x 5¼" (larger - width exceeds nominal!)

Check your old filter - The model number is usually printed on the filter frame (most reliable method) You can use any 16x25x5 that has your compatible model number because they will have the same actual size.
Check your filter cabinet - Look for a model number sticker on the cabinet housing (e.g., "Honeywell F100", "Lennox HCC20-28")
Contact your HVAC contractor - They have records of which cabinet was installed and can tell you the exact filter model
Measure the actual filter - If you have the old filter, measure the exact dimensions including fractions
